Depending on your needs, your dentist may have recommended a partial or complete dentures. But no matter which style you have, they will need to be well-maintained to ensure that they fit comfortably and properly every time. If you are caring for dentures in Annapolis, read below to learn the best way to take care of them and how to ensure that they last for a long time.

Cleaning Your Dentures

Just like your natural teeth, dentures can develop plaque and bacteria. If they aren’t cleaned every day, your dentures can deteriorate or become worn and develop a foul odor. Here are steps to clean them properly:

  • Protect: Your dentures are very delicate and easily breakable, so it’s important to hold them over a soft towel or a sink full of water as you begin your cleansing routine.
  • Brush: Using a denture brush, brush your dentures with denture cleanser and warm water (not hot!) to remove food particles, plaque and bacteria. Make sure to avoid abrasive tools and toothpastes. You should also avoid whitening toothpastes and any products that contain bleach. Don’t forget to brush your gums, your natural teeth and tongue using a fluoride toothpaste. This will eliminate plaque and keep bacteria from attaching to your dentures once you’ve placed them back into your mouth.
  • Rinse and Soak: Once you’ve brushed your dentures, make sure to thoroughly rinse them with warm water. Your final step is to soak them in a mild denture solution overnight.

Storing Your Dentures

If they dry out or are placed in hot water, your dentures can warp and lose their shape. Even slight warping can make them very uncomfortable. Always store them in room-temperature water or denture solution and out of the reach of children and pets! Don’t forget to rinse them thoroughly when you’re ready to put them back into your mouth. The chemicals found in denture solution can sometimes contain chemicals that can make you sick or cause pain and burning if swallowed.

Keeping your dentures clean and stain-free is important to having a fresh, bright smile. Regular visits to your dentist in Annapolis can fix any minor problems you may have and help your dentures fit comfortably. With proper care, they can last for 10 years or even longer!
